Part of the From Silence to Somewhere series
On the humble occasion of reaching 1 500 followers on Instagram, and preparing what could soon be the first Melting Reality photobook, I decided to briefly return to the very beginning. The first piece, created before any of this became what it is now – and create it again.
And because on that March night in 2020 I had only barely realized what just happened – that I found an actual artistic language of mine – the first “From Silence to Somewhere” naturally doesn’t really compare in its layering or sense of intricacy to later Melting Reality pieces, in their ever-increasing complexity. However, it did start something quite interesting to me, and so it will always have a special place within this story.
And so, I decided to recreate it, two and half years later. The same piece – but with today’s melting experience. Having traced back the original photographs used as well as the basic process, I used those again in almost the same way. Trying to preserve – or recapture – the ‘early’ Melting Reality style of monochrome pieces blending fewer scenes, emphasising general impression rather than intricate detail, I made sure not to overdo the blending part of the process and of course use the same kind of silvery colour filter.
In the end, it is something akin to a remaster – or “remix from original master plates”; the same, but more up-to-date. I love it.
